About the Color (A-Maying)
This bold green colorway is like the first buds of spring bursting through the last layer of winter snow. This green is a true Kelly or emerald color, full of possibility (and maybe a hint of jealousy).
The Story Behind the Colorway Name
One beautiful May day, Guenevere and a party of knights and ladies go a-maying (a ride through the forest). Sir Thomas Malory describes the scene, comparing the blooming of the plants and trees with the blooming of love in the hearts of men and women (he calls it the “lusty month of May”). Malory ends this passage by complimenting Guenevere: “while she lived, she was a true lover, and therefore she had a good end.” Malory rarely has anything nice to say about Guenevere, so this passage is quite exceptional.
Back to the story: Guenevere has commanded her entourage to dress in green. Because it is a pleasure outing, the knights are not wearing armor or carrying weapons beyond a sword. Malory describes them as “bedecked with herbs, moss, and flowers in the best spring fashion.” Meleagant, a dishonorable knight who has coveted Guenevere, takes advantage of this outing. Noticing Lancelot is not among the group (Meleagant is afraid of Lancelot), Meleagant gathers his forces, dressed for battle, and charges toward Guenevere and her group. Although the knights do their best, Guenevere is captured.
