About the Colorway (Shame and Slander)
Is it pink or purple? Let’s call it raspberry – a magenta streaked through with orchid and burgundy. This colorway is the deep shade of purple-pink that your cheeks turn when everyone in the room is talking about your secret love affair.
The Story Behind the Colorway Name
The knights have been away on the quest for the holy grail. Not all of them have returned, so there is great rejoicing for those who have returned to the court. Lancelot had only partially succeeded in the quest for the grail, in large part due to his love for Guenevere, which prevented him from being pure enough to achieve the grail. And although he had promised to forsake his love for Guenevere upon his return, Malory says that Lancelot soon forgot the promise that he had made and that he and Guenevere “loved together more hotter than they did before.” This causes a lot of gossip within the court.
Lancelot does at this point try to distance himself from the queen, which greatly upsets Guenevere. Jealous at the attention he was paying to other women, Guenevere chastises him. He tries to explain that he is doing it in her best interest because although he could leave the court and be away from the gossip, Guenevere cannot do so as she must remain at court amidst all of the negative comments directed toward her. Lancelot says, “The boldness of you and me will bring us to shame and slander, and that were me loath to see you dishonored.”
